More on that pesky IUD

I just finished my 5th period since getting the IUD. After 8 days. Better. I learned a trick when I went in for my follow-up: take 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours for the first three days. It's either that, or my uterus is getting used to the thing inside it... I don't want to risk finding out which, 'cause a couple of months ago my period was holding steady at 12 days and major cramping... which is helped almost entirely by the preemptive 800 mg....

I would recommend this thing highly to anyone who doesn't want to end up in Planned Parenthood getting a pre-baby sucked out of them. Although my sis just went in for an exam and asked about it and the doctor said not to get one unless you're in a monogamous relationship because if you get an STD the IUD can greatly complicate it. So that.

I still have a bit of a baby complex. In that I really want one a lot less than I used to. We'll see how that pans out.

  1. Hey, about your sister: I don't think that's strictly true, though you do need to be good about using condoms and treating any STIs you do get right away. The World Health Organization updated all their guidelines on IUDs a year or two ago and it's taking doctors a while to catch up, so that may be related. Summaries of the latest guidelines are more nuanced than just "no IUD if you're not monogamous":

Not saying an IUD is necessarily everyone's best choice, but it's nice to have all the info. (Hope I'm being helpful rather than nosy. I've worked in a couple clinics and feel strongly about women's access to health info!)

  4. Hi eve, I found your blog a week or two ago and have been reading here and there since then. It's nice to find a blog that is informative and open about, well, abortion and related incidents. There aren't many out there -- I know because I've been searching for ages.

I write for a blog called the Abortioneers, which is mostly about our experiences helping women get abortions, but we also try to maintain a list of the (very few!) blogs out there that are from the perspective of a woman seeking abortion care. In our experience, clients often say they feel alone, or that they tried to find info online and only got scary propaganda or medical stuff.

Anyway, for this reason I was wondering if you'd be OK with us adding your blog to our list. If not, that's totally fine, I won't mention it on the blog and just remain a private fan. Thanks for reading - and I hope your cramps die down soon!

  5. Hi there,

Please feel free to add this blog to the list. One of the two main reasons I started this blog(the other being for my own mental health!) was because I had found so few relatable experiences and was hoping mine could bring a little relief--or something-- for someone else.
So go ahead. And thanks for asking!

  6. Yay, thank you! You've been added to the blogroll, so hopefully some stressed-out pregnant woman googling abortion will find your blog, because to be honest I really enjoyed it. Um sorry if that sounds weird, since probably the topic wasn't so enjoyable for you at the time. I meant that most of what you wrote about the pregnancy is exactly how I think I'd feel if it happened to me right now. Except funnier. Thanks again!
